It's All Lies: A True Story
Based on what you've read of the First Draft so far, you would:

Definitely buy the book when it is available on the shelves.
Probably would buy the book when it is available on the shelves.
Wouldn't buy it - it's not to my tastes.

NaNoWriMo'05: The End

Hello gentle Reader.

National Novel Writing Month 2005 has come to an end.

For this site, this means that no additional chapters will be posted. But do not despair, fans of Puck & Co., as members of the Yahoo! Group that’s been set up will have access to the remaining chapters of the novel It’s All Lies: A True Story (in all its ‘first draft glory’) as they become available (am part way through the Chapter 17 at present). At the risk of sounding like a total wanker, I’m actually quite proud of how the first novel in the Puck Series has turned out, especially as it’s a ‘first draft’. Sure, some of the background characters remain a bit rough and/or elusive, but I’ll flesh them out a little more in succeeding drafts, as well as in future installments of the series.

As the writer/creator of the curious little world that Puck and his friends inhabit, it has been fascinating to see how people react to the characters. Without a doubt, Nicky French and drag queen Goldie Knox have proven to be (so far) the most popular characters. Though I have to wonder how loveable Readers would find them in Real Life? Both characters have been inspired by Real Life counterparts, though embellished and/or ‘cleaned up’ to make them a little more ‘reader-friendly’; I must admit, I do wonder how the Real Life counterparts to Nicky and Goldie would/will respond to them?

Working on this particular story was challenging on a variety of levels; firstly, I’ve never tried my hand at the murder/mystery/thriller genre before, so wasn’t the least bit sure of what I was getting myself into. Luckily, the story was one I knew only too well, a fact that I think helped a lot in maintaining the continuity and ensured I didn’t overlook (so far) including clues and details for the Reader to discover and have in their possession, so that they might have the chance to solve the ‘mystery’ before the story was done.

The dark side of working on a story that one has lived through is probably quite apparent; I have found certain parts of the novel quite hard to write, and on more than one occasion I cringed at having to revisit a chapter of my Life that has been a source of so much pain and anxiety and trauma. But while the novel is not yet finished (though I’ve already composed the remaining chapters in my head, at least), taking this journey in this manner has, I believe, gone a long way in helping me to shrug off the last the demons. But I’ve saved some of the worst for the final chapter – just you wait and see!

One thing I will miss about NaNoWriMo is the concept of working to a deadline; in all honesty, without a deadline, a goal, I tend to procrastinate a bit with my writing. However, that may not be the case this time around, as am having such fun with this story and these characters.

I had tried on a couple of previous occasions to write a fictionalized account of the events described within this story, but with awful results. It just didn’t work, no matter how I approached the story or tried to fashion the main characters. So why does it (and I feel it does) work this time? Am not 100% sure of the answer, although I do think that aiming for a balance of light and dark in the characters and the action has a lot to do with it – too much of either the light or the dark and the story would either become trivial and meaningless or too damn depressing and grim to keep a Reader involved.

Time to wind this up – but not before I say a BIG THANK YOU to those Readers who have stuck it out so far during NaNoWriMo. Sincerely hope you’ll stick around to see what happens in the end, as well as get a small taste of the second novel in the Puck Series, tentatively entitled Ripped.

Be well and happy, gentle Reader. Hope that Life is being kind to you and yours. Look forward to your continuing company as the story progresses…
